Way up high a tender feel-good tune rings out on electric violin while text, projected onto the long skirt sends motivational messages to the audience. Twinkling lights and sweeping lasers make for an unforgettable show. At the recent Eskom Young Scientists Awards event for 2018 Laserx and I teamed up to create a show-stopping opening act complete with Laser bow and heads, Chroma LED dress and violin.
And the work the students produce at the Young Scientists awards is truly inspiring.

The stately Northwards House in Parktown hosts regular classical concerts. The beautiful Sir Herbert Baker Home has a lovely acoustic and an inviting music room that takes one back in time. This as the backdrop for a concert I did with cellist Carel Henn a few weeks ago. Our first half repertoire consisted of a sonata for solo cello and violin and other adapted classical works for a duo format.
We had a surprise though for the second half. As not much repertoire is arranged for solo cello and violin, we decided to arrange some contemporary light songs for the duo and then to perform them on electric instruments.
The audience were delighted by the contrast and a favourite on the day was Sting’s “Fragile”
A glitzy red carpet affair was laid out for the launch of The Voice 2016. There was a mood of palpable excitement in the air as media snapped away at artists enjoying the red carpet treatment! On arrivals guests and VIPs were treated to an electric violin performance by Kristel Birkholtz in The Bubble.
These laser tech guys are always tinkering about and today Munki and I tried out a new concept, the Butterfly Bow for the Laser Violin act. The effect is a wide butterfly-shaped arc on either end of the bow which washes over the the audience as I performed violin to a mesmerizing house track. The crowd all had their phones out trying to capture the laser show, but this is the kind of act that you have to experience live!
