New Music Friday!

The Wheel Keeps Turning (instrumental)-A rock inspired instrumental This instrumental version of Wheel Keeps Turning (vocal version as recorded by Cherry Pill) reflects the the ever-changing seasons of life. The song draws on imagery from the world around to represent how life and times can change. 'Seasons come, seasons go, but there’s one thing that I know; it’s that the wheel comes around again'. The song could be described as well delivered rock sound where the solo violin [...]

String Sessions

The latest session project was for a mini string orchestra. After some special requests to hear the viola I took a quick video while recording. The feedback on this project was just fantastic, I am so enjoying being able to record for composers/songwriters all over the world! 'Kristel recorded violin and viola parts for a musical theater song and I am not exaggerating when I say I had goosebumps when I first heard them! Her communication during the process was [...]

Music Video ‘Goat-Crashers’

Guess who made a guest appearance at yesterday's music video shoot? Everything was perfect, the rain held back, the golden sunlight softly lighting the veld scene where we were about to shoot a music video for Christmas. Then just as we were ready to begin, the local grazers decided they would like to feature in the video and wandered into shot!

Viola Session

This week I got to dust off my viola for a session on a Spanish track. The lovely alto sound is just perfect for a sultry Spanish song.

The Magic of Theatre

There is something magical about a Theatre. The red fold-up chairs, the glow of warm lights and the moments of prose or song that seem to hang in the air. Stepping out onto the stage at the Market Theatre for a private event this weekend felt like stepping into an ongoing production of plays, musicals, and concerts that tell our stories past, present and future.

Original Violin Music

Tears That Flow (Instrumental) is a violin led version of a vocal song I wrote and released by the same name with my band Cherry Pill. Listen out for soaring  melodic choruses and pensive verse parts. The song was inspired by overcoming a period of physical and personal drought Tears that Flow recalls the feeling of longing for the return of something you once had or a hunger for something new. The contemplative 'Tears That Flow' will gently take you to [...]

Session Violinist

As all things turning increasingly online,I have been trying my hand (or fingers as it were) at online session work. Very happy to have had some contented clients in the past few weeks. The most recent project had this to say ' Kristel did an amazing job on my track. She was easy to work with, and got the job done more than on time. The recording quality and performance were both excellent. I just got the first mix back from [...]

Singing in the Rain

It's the start of the rainy season here in Gauteng with some big downpours. It reminded me of a recent improvisation I did on 'Singing in the Rain' the carefree song from the 1952 film of the same name. Hope it brightens your day! Listen to the version here:

Wedding Bells

A lovely couple that recently tied the knot at Summerplace had this to say: 'I have to tell you, you were the best for the function I regret not having you for the whole evening, you were amazing.'

Love is in the air

'Let's do it, let's fall in love'.... so goes the chorus of Cole Porters memorable song 'Let's fall in Love' . With spring in  the air and blossoms on the trees, Shepstone's  Garden was a perfect setting for this mid-week engagement event... and she said yes!

Shall we tango? "Por una Cabeza" by Carlos Gardel also known for it's use as the tango from the movie "Scent of a Woman" performed here on violin and guitar. Happy Birthdaygram!

I was booked to perform at a birthday event this weekend where the birthday girl had put in so much planning to make her special day tops. With the current quarantine measures in place, no public celebrations are happening. As a birthday gesture I recorded a happy birthdaygram for her to add a special touch to her private celebrations at home. The birthdaygram is available here:

Some Old Folk Tunes

In putting together some teaching material, I came across an old Sea Shanty called The Leaving of Liverpool. It is a song I had played years ago with a folk band and decided to look more into it's roots. It dates from around the 1880s if not earlier during the Gold Rush  days. It was sung as  an off-watch song or "forebitter," rather than a sea shanty.A lovely insight to the role music and songs can play in everyday life, [...]

What to do when lock-down means no more performing?

As lock-down approaches as a result of the Covid-19 virus, may musicians have found that booking s and events of all kinds have had to cancel or postpone leaving musicians with a lot more time on their hands and likely less money in their pockets as a result. In the 21-day lock-down period, I've made a list of productive music- related activities to keep 'in the game' as well as a sense of sanity. One such activity is to record [...]

Singing Telegram

With my violin replaced by a bunch of bright balloons and a hamper of champagne, I set off to deliver a musical telegram, a message sung to the well-known 'Time after Time' by Cindy Lauper. The celebration was for a local company merger with a new supplier. The balloons caused quite a stir at the office block and the look of surprise and engagement on the faces of the board-meeting members as I sung the message, was priceless.

Kids say the sweetest things!

At a recent public performance in the new Loftus Park centre a little boy drew me this picture on the back of a menu and rather shyly handed it over. It is so lovely to play at venues where children get to hear the violin performed. To see the look of surprise and amazement on their faces it truly special. A translation of the text reads ' You play beautiful violin' Loftus Park have great restaurants and a stage/activity area. [...]

Wedding Bells and Flower Girls

These sweeties were too cute not to blog about. It is a heart-warming moment when little flower girls or page boys walk in whilst I am playing a wedding entrance or exit song. These 4 little ones melted everyone's hearts in their matching floral dresses.

It’s Human Nature For Art’s Sake It was a treat to perform for the 'Human.Nature' photographic exhibition by Natalie Field held recently at the Berman Contemporary Gallery in Sandton, attracted much interest from art lovers and investors. Sunset on a Space Station

It's not everyday one gets to play at a Space Station. The quiet location nestled in the Magaliesburg mountains has a beautiful view of the bushveld which is dotted occasionally with Space antennae. As the sun was setting someone snapped this shot, Space stations and bushveld, who would have thought?

A Thankful Job

I often perform for many private functions and many are warm, happy celebrations. This weekend though I performed for a private lunch that inspired me deeply. A lady in her fifties had decided to to put on a special lunch to say thank-you to all her teachers. She tracked down all her primary and high school teachers that were still alive, arranged transport for them and had a hotel roll out the red carpet for them while I performed for [...]

Water Music

The theme of tonight's event was 'Water' to highlight the topical issues facing us regarding water. Each table had a different expression of water decoration and the event was perfectly situated along the Vaal river while I added some 'water music' to the occasion. Water is currently a very topical issue in South Africa with our current drought conditions. Water is precious!

To complete the look I had a dress made up with hand-cut plastic bag trim. It was such a [...]

As Unique as a Snowflake

On arriving at the Snowflake building on Potchefstroom this weekend, I was convinced I was at the wrong address. Being early to set up for a violin wedding performance at this venue, there was only one other car in the dusty parking lot, but the place otherwise looked like a derelict building. Plucking up the courage to speak to the occupants of the other car, I realised that I was at the right place and that appearances can be deceiving. [...]

Music Makes a Difference

As performer one doesn't often hear the audience stories behind the scenes of a show. At a recent lunchtime regular performance this last week, the concert co-coordinator told me these two lovely stories about how music can make a difference to people's lives: 'Kristel, thank you so much for today. One of our regular guests said she had sunk into depression over the past few weeks, but after your performance today, felt uplifted and able to carry on. Another rather fragile guest [...]

Filming for Elephants

As delicious coffee smells hung thick in the air at Urban Grind Coffee Roastery in Parkhurst, a small film crew headed by passionate wildlife videographer Paul Mills, started setting up camera angles. The story for the shoot was to create a typical morning on-the-go scenario of a woman drinking a cappuccino. The punchline of the shoot is that in the time it takes to drink a cuppa, an elephant has been shot. Paul, who directed and scripted the shoot is [...]

New Album by Cherry Pill: Instrumental in their Success

Cherry Pill took a detour this year and recorded an instrumental album titled Si Tu Savais . Si Tu Savais is a collection of well-loved standards that have helped shape Cherry Pill’s sound over the years, including rousing gypsy jazz inspired by Reinhardt and Grappelli, a touching rendition of Puccini’s O Mio Babbino Caro, and much more. Kristel and Rory of Cherry Pill decided to record Si Tu Savais as a tribute to some of the composers and songs that [...]

The stately Northwards House in Parktown hosts regular classical concerts. The beautiful Sir Herbert Baker Home has a lovely acoustic and an inviting music room that takes one back in time. The Mercedes Benz Long Service Awards was a touching event to sing and perform violin for. One particular prize-winner told this story as the highlight of his career. As part of a manufacturing plant for Mercedes Benz back in 1993, he and the other workers were excited about the upcoming release from prison of Nelson Mandela. They decided as a group to build a red Mercedes Benz for him upon his release. Without extra pay the workers added an [...]

L’Atelier de Givenchy in Song

The lovely new range of L’Atelier de Givenchy fragrances had a very special launch in Sandton City this August. An engraver was on hand to personalise any perfume bottles or lipsticks bought at the launch. This was a wonderful touch and many customers bought gifts for friends or themselves that they could personalise. To add some ‘fragrance’ to the air, I was asked to play some mood setting violin music to entertain the customers while choosing their perfect scent or [...]

An image from an event for a company breakaway in the gorgeous country setting of De Hoek Country Hotel,  where violin and some of my original songs were just a perfect fit. The beautiful photo was shot at this event by Natalie Field (Natalie Field Photography).

Food for Thought

I had the privilege of performing at an event hosted by the Unique Speaker Bureau - a collaborative team of keynote speakers. Unique Speaker Bureau Website

Swan Lake

What more idyllic stetting for a high tea than the Swan Lake tea garden at Heaven’s Gate, Boksburg.  Lovely eats and nibbles overlooking the lake with a smattering of violin.

On arrivals guests and VIPs were treated to an electric violin performance by Kristel Birkholtz in The Bubble.

Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree

Playing violin under this old oak tree was quite a special occasion. The company that worked on the property enjoyed the shade of this stately tree for over 20 years. Many functions, lunches and casual smoke-breaks were had under this tree. On this, their final day at the office, it was fitting to have one last lunch under the tree,  complete with a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree and an electric violin performance. On a sad note though, [...]

Elphin-Shell-Princess Violinist

This Mansion party was not a staid or stiff affair! Upon entering the elegant Munro Hotel, guests were given a five star reception. But around the corner awaited a fun surprise, on the patio were rubber ducks, snooker tables and even mermaids! How did I fit into the scene, well I was the elphin-shell-princess violinist on the shore of course.

Lights, Camera, Action!

An exciting day spent on set filming 2 scenes for an upcoming slot on the popular "Binnelanders" soapie.  I can’t give away any of the plot, but suffice to say I am playing violin in 2 scenes.  The slot should air in December so keep watching!

Technology meets Music

Whilst music and violin playing may be traditionally seen as a creative pursuit , I was certainly outnumbered by technology creators who competed in the Cyber Junkyard Competition. The ingenuity was astounding and perhaps I played second fiddle to these creatives!

LED Violin

Lights on her fingers,  lights on her toes,  she will make music wherever she goes…Twinkling lights give a different twist to a violin and ballet performance for a Gala dinner.

Violin and the Volvos

Despite the chilly evening on Friday 31 July many Volvo enthusiasts, young and old, braved the cold to be among the first  to see the new XC90 . There were a range of Classic  and Sport model Volvo’s on display from private collectors as well. My brief was to create drama and suspense with violin music before the great reveal, which went down with much excitement.  I couldn’t even get a photo with the new car the crowd was [...]

Song of the Entrepreneur

The room was a-buzz with energy at last night's Aurik Business Accelerator event . Brilliant entrepreneurs and small business owners from diverse backgrounds and industries converged for the award evening at the prestigious Michelangelo Hotel. True to entrepreneurial flair , networking never stops. So while performing violin over the dinner service, a couple of unabashed entrepreneurs networked with me. Song of the entrepreneur!

Lady in Red

A client had this to say regarding a Marketing Awards event last night : “I really enjoyed the Lady in Red / Carpet Electric Violin – wow – was an awesome touch!!!”

A Musical Journey Around the World

As a sort of musical tour-guide for an event themed “Around the World in 80 Minutes” at the Hyatt, Dar-Es-Salaam, my brief was to perform a repertoire of songs that would take the audience on a journey around the world. The guest list included dignitaries and business leaders from across the globe so finding repertoire that would be relevant was a bit challenging! I meandered through some Western Classical to American Jazz and blues, to some Spanish rhythms and [...]

Violin While You Shop

I have played violin at various times of the day for different events. This morning though, I was dressed in glamorous red by 5h30 am to perform for the Pick n Pay store opening in the new Menlyn Grocery Avenue. It was amazing to see the queues of people lining up that early to snap up the opening specials!

New Butterfly Bow for the Violin Laser Show

These laser tech guys are always tinkering about and today Munki and I  tried out a new concept, the Butterfly Bow for the Laser Violin act. The effect is a wide butterfly-shaped arc on either end of the bow which washes over the the audience as I performed violin to a mesmerizing house track. The crowd all had their phones out trying to capture the laser show, but this is the kind of act that you have to experience [...]

A Bubbly Breakfast Event

As early morning light shone through the tree-shaded patio of Klein Kaap Boutique Hotel, a surprise Bubble awaited the guests wafting in for breakfast. In such an enchanting setting I just had to include some classical numbers in the violin repertoire like Pachelbell’s Canon in D.

Tanzania Electric Violin Performance

While my stop  in and out of Tanzania was short, I was there long enough to experience that Dar es Salaam is indeed a vibrant and friendly city! I was there  to perform electric laser violin for a 4G launch. Travelling with lasers and electric violins is an interesting experience as airport security staff are concerned by all wires and gadgets. So I usually offer to play them a tune on the violin to show that I am actually [...]

Bush Wedding

Rolling green hills and bush-veld laid a picturesque backdrop to an exquisite bush wedding. I performed some chilled violin music as guests milled about during the cocktails sessions. A few curious Karoo sheep even stopped by to see the proceedings!

High Fashion and Fast Cars

On Wednesday, an otherwise uneventful and unlit section of Rivonia Road was punctuated by the glimmer of white lights illuminating a muscular line of Aston Martin roadsters on the showroom floor of Aston Martin Sandton.  From the sleek silver Vanquish to the red-trimmed black Vantage, these cars look like they’re ready to spring into action even when in repose.  Playing classical violin against this backdrop made for an interesting juxtaposition – elegance meets power. Sharply-dressed Sandton businessmen congregated on [...]

St Patrick’s Day Fiddler

Inspired by the St Patrick’s Day theme for the Investment Conference Event at Sun City , I wrote this limerick: A fiddler on Sun City’s Green Played jigs and reels to the keen Investors who danced  And brokers who pranced To let off some conferencing steam   Being an ‘Irish’ fiddler is so much fun as the music is just so playable for the violin. It is wonderful to see how guests from all walks of life tend to [...]
